How does an interpersonal communication theorist research such a large media event as the Enron and Worldcom scandal? If you are Tim Hallet you use the Symbolic Interaction Theory to determine the downfall from its different approaches on organizational culture. By not focusing so much on Enron, but that of the symbolic overturn of Enron's financial advisor Arthur Anderson and Co. The main focus of Tim Halletts article is to spread light on corporate scandal and how they have affected an increase in the revalence of organizational culture. The study Hallett conducts has two separate approaches. One envisions culture as beliefs and values held by subjects in the organization. "The second approach removes organizational culture from the subjective minds of actors and places it in public by emphasizing espoused beliefs, ideologies, stories, myths, rituals, ceremonies, and artifacts (129)." Hallett argues that reconceptualized organizational culture as a negotiated order that emerges through interactions between participants, an order influenced by those with the symbolic power to define the situation. Hallett test his theory by devising many self-accumulated vocabulary t
erminologies, some even defined by himself, and entering them into explanations. As background for the company, it was established in the 1920's by Mr. If his solution is too complex and hard to understand, then how can it be used in a contemporary heuristic way. Hallett tested the theory of symbolic difference between the business approach of the samurai and that of the merchant. The company was described by a Japanese client as, "being much like an honorable samurai (133)," as opposed to a "merchant" who is only out to better himself with whatever deal he is working on. I found this very distressing, especially after trying in vain to capture what his definition of "habitus" meant when it was defined using "structured structures predisposed to function as structuring structures (130). " The main example Hallett uses for testing his view on organizational culture is Arthur Anderson and Company. Opinion I believe Hallett created a contemporary look at organizational structure with the business world and their practices in this article. All the while through the writing, Hallett kept the same voice and opinion. Instead of being a merchant and trying to tag on extra costs and fees for counseling and etc, Anderson made his company like the samurai whom measure contribution more by the quality of service rendered than by if they were making a good living out of it or not. Hallett is very confusing during his writing because he changes the definitions of words to fit his own thoughts. Hallett did a good job at maintaining a good voice and proving that situational interaction theory is heuristic in nature. His examples, when examined, took on great meaning toward the study and opened a better understanding of his subject. " Hallett writes, "I define organizational culture as a negotiated order that emerges through the interaction between actors, a negotiated order influenced in particular by people with symbolic power- the power to define the situation in which interactions take place (130). These attributes instilled a commendable respect toward Anderson's company, thus bringing about more clientele because of such honest work.
