Unmasked
In this essay I’m comparing Stolen which I saw at Malvern Theatre and the unmasked performance which I took part in at school as part of a Gcse Drama course. Unmasked is a play about young people from dysfunctional families in modern day middle class Britain. Unmasked was shown using mask work, dance drama, and monologues. In unmasked we used masks to show the characters emotion without showing the character until it was there actual piece. My mask had a very stern face. My piece was about a young man whose dad just sat in an art gallery all day and just ignored him. Other characters in unmasked include a boy who steal things. Also a girl who is put in an orphanage and treated poorly there and has a lot of her stuff taken away from her. Another character is one that is being followed by a boy she doesn’t like and complains that the boy stalks her and feels she is watching him all the time. We then get to see the character of the boy who’s following her, he claims to just like her and not be nervous and not following her. In unmasked each of us wear a mask to show our facial expression and at the start we all come in as a group to some music, the way we walk in helps us show what our . . .
They are both similar as both use monologues and both of them use dance drama in between scenes to show where the next scene is heading. We used stylised movement, which relates to the hand clapping in stolen. My mask is a angry straight faced mask which describes my character as he is also straight faced and angry. My Character is a very angry character, so as I walk in I kick over a chair with some towels on it and sit down with my arms crossed. Even though we came from different backgrounds as Ozzy came from a working class background and I came from a Middle class Background we both shared the same problems. The other male character is Sandy who moves from job to job very quickly and does not like the inner city life and wants to move into the great red outback. Stolen is about 5 Australian children that have been taken out of their natural background. Stolen was written by Jane Harris and set in the 1950s and is about Australian indigenous people taken away from their natural background and put into a white society. The final character is Annie who is brought up in a white background and then gets confused when she is told that her mother is still alive. Whereas the kids in stolen all came from the same backgrounds and could not help the fact of being where they were. Earlier in the year we did a part on Ozzy Osborne and I think that my character in Unmasked relates to this as Ozzy Osborne also did not get on well with his dad and always tried hard to gain his dads respect for him. We also did a dance drama to show how a young girl became pregnant on holiday and came home and was kept secret by her family. The first child we look at is Ruby who is a girl that was abused as a child and is living in hope as she keeps getting taken out but when she comes back we find out that she has been abused again, a look of fear and shame in her eyes. We used trestle theatre masks some were angry some were sad and each one portrayed the character behind the mask and when we did the dance drama part each character portrayed what feeling the mask showed.
