Last Game
To be given the chance to play varsity baseball was one of the greatest times of my life. I played baseball for four years, and my junior and senior year I made the all-state team. My best friend, Pat, and I played every regular season game and both all-state teams together. The final game of our season was unforgettable. It had been 4 years of great enjoyment with my best friend, Pat Bovee. We always clowned around in practice by joking around with other players but when the game would start we had a high intensity, because playing baseball with the school was very important to us. Pat would pitch, and I would play catcher. When he wasn’t pitching, he would play first base. Our baseball team had made it to the championship of our state tournament. Before our team took the field our coach Jerry Toubl gave us a talk. He said, “Well men, we’ve came a long way. Today’s the day we’ve all practiced so hard for, but I want to have fun with it. Lets treat this like every other game we have won. You’re all winners, win or lose. So lets go out and play this game as hard as you can.” As I ran on to that field I recalled all the . . .
We made it this far because our record for the season was 36-4. Pat was pitching a three hitter and I was playing well too, I was 2-4, hitting two doubles and two groundouts. There were many errors because the field was all dirt and felt like concrete because of the lack of rain. The ground ball took a bad bounce and hit him square in the ribs. The whole team was proud at Pat, Andy and I, because if I never got on base, we could have lost the game. The score kept going back and forth. I waited on the ball and hit a line drive into deep left-center for a stand up double. There were two outs and a runner on third base. practicing I had done, and I knew I owed most of it to my father. He picked up the ball, which was to the left of him, spun around and threw that ball with all his power to first base. Then Pat came up and hit the first pitch for a two-run homerun for us to take the lead by one. Having such a great and inspiring coach made me feel proud to have won the championship for our coach. We took the field and Pat was still pitching. Pat then struck out the next two batters. The game was between the Wauwatosa East Red Raiders and the Brookfield East Spartans.
