Earthquake At Dawn

The Historical period that this book was written in was the early 1900’s when people were still migrating west. Some of the issues discussed in this book are about the growth of San Francisco and wealth of the people, class of people (servants and their masters), the corruption of Politicians and the differences between people of different social classes. Edith and her servant Daisy are traveling together when the earthquake hits. Daisy’s job as Edith’s servant was about to change. She is very upset that the earthquake will change her plans. She says in one part of the book:

“I counted my sorrows: the idea of returning to Moke Hill so soon filled me with despair. All those months of dreaming and enduring! For an instant I felt desperate enough to run back to the harbor, even to abandon Edith—anything to avoi

But the conflagration that followed burned up hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of property There is no estimating within hundreds of millions the actual damage wrought. But mostly he describes the fires which burned everything in the city that the earthquakes did not destroy. Its industrial section is wiped out. Edith and Daisy, the main characters in the book, describe the whole city of San Francisco being destroyed and when they are describing it, it makes you feel like you can see what is happening. Remains only the fringe of dwelling houses on the outskirts of what was once San Francisco”. Its social and residential section is wiped out. He and other people would do things to make money for themselves and their friends. The politicians and the newspapers in San Francisco began to call this the “Great Fire” instead of the “Great Earthquake” because they were afraid that the thought of earthquakes would keep people away from San Francisco. In this story they talk about the mayor of San Francisco and how bad a person he was. Nothing remains of it but memories and a fringe of dwelling-houses on its outskirts. Not in history has a modern imperial city been so completely destroyed. This is the same as how people in New York City reacted when the terrorists crashed the planes into the World Trade Center.
