Number of the Stars

“Number the Stars” written by Louis Lowry is a book about a Danish family and their hard life during the war. It takes place in Copenhagen, Denmark during the early 1940’s when the German’s have invaded their country. The story is about a family named the Johansen’s. In the family there is Anne Marie who’s 10, Kirsti who’s 5, Mr. Johansen and Mrs. Johansen.

The story begins with the Johansen sisters racing their Jewish friend Ellen Rosen home from school. The German soldiers order them to “Stop”. When they go home they tell their parents about their incident with the German soldiers. Their parents tell them more about the war and why the soldiers are there. Ellen is warned to be a face in the crowd because she is Jewish, and the Germans are here for all Jewish people.

Soon they started relocating Jews. Mr. and Mrs. Rosen went to stay with friends and Ellen stayed with the Johansen’s to be safe. Times begin to get tough. I think this was a very good story and well written and I liked this book a lot because it’s a very factual and based on a real war. The sun was beginning to rise and her mother did not get back from the second trip yet. After that encounter with the soldiers, Mrs. Rosen dropped a packet containing a handkerchief that would numb dog’s noses so they couldn’t be smelled when they were hiding on the boats.

The day after they arrived, Uncle Henrik announced that Anne Marie’s Aunt Bertha had passed away. Later in the day Anne Marie’s uncle told her that it was a fake death to help the Jews get to Sweden. They were about to open the coffin to see who was inside when Mrs. The soldiers had believed her and they left with out being suspicious. So she gave to her Uncle and went back to the house.

That night Peter drove over with some other Jews. She walks downstairs and found her mom lying on the ground. The next couple of days they did lots of things like pick flowers, milk the cow, play with the kitten, and walk to the ocean and look across to Sweden.
