Number of the Stars

             "Number the Stars" written by Louis Lowry is a book about a Danish family and their hard life during the war. It takes place in Copenhagen, Denmark during the early 1940's when the German's have invaded their country. The story is about a family named the Johansen's. In the family there is Anne Marie who's 10, Kirsti who's 5, Mr. Johansen and Mrs. Johansen.
             The story begins with the Johansen sisters racing their Jewish friend Ellen Rosen home from school. The German soldiers order them to "Stop". When they go home they tell their parents about their incident with the German soldiers. Their parents tell them more about the war and why the soldiers are there. Ellen is warned to be a face in the crowd because she is Jewish, and the Germans are here for all Jewish people.
             Soon they started relocating Jews. Mr. and Mrs. Rosen went to stay with friends and Ellen stayed with the Johansen's to be safe. Times begin to get tough. The Johansen's must live without many things such as sugar, butter, coffee, and cigarettes. Kirsti misses cupcakes so much she has dreams about them. But even though things are difficult, Mr. and Mrs. Johansen still try to make life normal by telling jokes and stories.
             One day the Johansen's learn that the soldiers were coming to their house so they disguised Ellen as Lise, Anne Marie's older sister who died in a car accident. After that encounter with the soldiers, Mrs. Johansen took Anne Marie, Kirsti, and Ellen to their Uncle Henrik's farm.
             They took a train to their Uncle's town, and then they walked to their Uncle's farm. When they got there they got there they got their stuff and settled in their rooms. The next couple of days they did lots of things like pick flowers, milk the cow, play with the kitten, and walk to the ocean and look across to Sweden.
