I Have A Dream
Martin Luther King Jr. gave an excellent speech on August 28th, 1963. This speech became know as the "I Have A Dream" speech. It was given at the Lincoln Memorial to a crowd of more than 200,000. Dr. King's speech was powerful and moving as he tried to relate to every American's sense of freedom. Dr King uses very power words and metaphors to paint more than one picture. He opens by capitalizing on the location; he talks about what Lincoln did for Black American by signing the Emancipation Proclamation (2). He then reminds his audience "one hundred years later, the . . .
He uses cashing a check as a metaphor to attaining freedom; this is a very powerful metaphor as everyone can relate to it. The only reason the speech has been carried through time is because of the person that gave it and even then the only reason he is remembered is because he was assonated. In short the speech gives the details of the current situation and that everyone should come together to change it. I don't believe that the speech is exceptional. In his closing he uses his powerful voice to his advantage and it is one of the things he is remembered for. All of these metaphors are very powerful because everyone can relate to them. Dr King uses repetition to end his speech by telling the audience to let freedom ring form here and there. After this introduction he moves on to his first line of action, "we have come to the capital to cash a check" (4). The word choice throughout the speech is exceptional because while intelligent it is put into words that even the lowest educated person could comprehend. It was just given by a very powerful speaker and on a very good topic. He expands on it by saying that by saying that the "vaults of opportunity in this Nation" are not empty. He then closes with "Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!" (30) Which basically summarizes his whole speech. I would think that a speech introducing a solution would have been much better.
