Webster’s Dictionary defines moral as; “pertinent to the distinction between right and wrong, and the rules of right conduct.” In today’s society the lines of societal morality have been blurred into nothing more than an illusion. What is right for society is no longer decided by the people of the society, but more by the society’s media. Instead of being used as a tool to help people improve themselves or feel safe, it highlights everything that is wrong with our society. If you turn on the ten o’clock news you will never hear the great things that happened that day, instead you will hear of every robbery, murder, rape, house fire, tax scandal, government scandal, you name it it’s there, within 500 hundred miles of your respective city. But the thing about all of this is, that the government can do absolutely nothing about because of something called the 1st Amendment. Much was the same in Plato’s day, except, Plato would banish his media (artists and poets) from his society because he believed that art is a significant formative agent in man’s moral and spirit
. . .
If Franz Kafka had been alive in Plato’s society he would have been banished indefinitely for his novel The Metamorphosis. ual development and should teach by presenting a moral vision of reality. But I guess I can only dream, to bad he was not around Plato for then I would never have had to read this piece and been exposed to its outlandish accounts of human reality.
Secondly, the reaction of the family when the bug appears is completely out of wack. If only he could have written a guide to writing book or something. Why on earth could this bug, think, feel and reason? If having a life size beetle wandering around the house was not bad enough try having a life size beetle that could think, feel, and reason like humans. But I would take something poorly written and realistic of something well written and off-base any day of the week. Throughout the story the bug’s family, especially its sister and mother, stay glued to the illusion that this bug is still part of their family and should be treated as such. HE WAS AFRAID OF SCARING HIS MOTHER, WAS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO HIDE, AND HE SPOKE OF PAIN. (Except in the movie Star Ship Troopers, but that is just a movie. This piece was and still is a crude instrument in the altered reality that art can present to people and it is a shame that his time and effort could not have been put towards something that would have been good for society. And the fact that they actually still try to feed it real food and give it the food it liked when it was human makes it even more outlandish. They just could not get over the fact that this is a bug on the outside and the inside.
