Ecotourism
Ecotourism is the fastest growing sector in the tourism industry business today, and is still without a standard industry definition. In the analysis of ecotourism, I would like to look at the following areas: (1) varying definitions, principles, and marketing of ecotourism, (2) distinguishing between ecotourism and tourism, (3) trying to draw some conceptual links between ecotourism and other areas of recreation and conservation, and (4) the future of ecotourism as it relates to Texas and wildlife and fisheries management. The International Ecotourism Society (TIES), founded in 1990, is the largest and oldest ecotourism organization in the world. TIES' defines ecotourism as the responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and sustains the well-being of local people. Another definition: Ecotourism is an increasingly popular form of tourism in which tourists seek out wild and scenic areas such as rainforests or mountains for an active and educational trip. Another NGO defines ecotourism as low-impact tourism, based on appreciation of the environment and where a conscious effort is made to re-invest an adequate proportion of revenues in conservation of the resource upon which it is based. The industry encompasses many types of tourists. In fact, the full measure of Texas in the next century will only be realized if our vision includes sustainability along with profitability. The irony is that ecotourism can bring pressures on natural resources that could destroy much of the value that it ultimately depends (Berle,1990; Rosenow,1979). Aldo Leopold (Sand County Almanac 1949 ), states " Drums along the Mohawk are now honks along the rivers of the world. This useful tool can only reach its full potential, if ecotourism stakeholders educate themselves as to the adequate use of this media. Homo sapiens putters no more under his own vine and fig tree; he has poured into his gas tank the stored motivity of countless creatures aspiring through the ages to wiggle their way to pastures new. Another more detail attempt to define ecotourism by (Fennell 2000) is by the way the action conforms to certain principles of ecotourism: (1) it occurs in a unique natural resource, (2) it attracts a unique clientele, (3) it is a responsible use of natural resources, (4) it provides for economic support for resource conservation, (5) it provides for economic advantages over other uses, and (6) it directs economic assistance to the local economy. In the 1980s, alternative forms of tourism began attracting the interest of governments, communities, NGO's, and scholars alike. " The standard terminology of ecotourism is today more of an American concept, however, ecotourism is fast becoming an international and global issue. These differences are not always black and white, so it is little wonder that many forms of tourism can be construed as ecotourism to some degree (Jesitus,1992b). There are several major differences in the concept of ecotourism and other forms of tourism. The concept of ecotourism is a new generation issue, however, the controversy over defining tourism and outdoor recreation has existed for many decades. Our rich natural heritage, natural assets, and diverse resource base is a basis for our pride in our culture. The term 'ecotourism' is less frequently used in Europe and other continents than in the Americas. These latter issues should be an important part of responsible marketing communications, because potential visitors are more in tune with these issues today than ever before in history.
