Nancy Mairs, who has multiple sclerosis, a chronic degenerative disease of the central nervous system, wrote the inspiring essay "On Being a Cripple," in which she demonstrates how she gracefully accepts and lives with her disease, how she deals with the difficulties that follow, and how she finds humors in life though she suffers from the brutal fact of her malady. In the article, she fully displays her gratitude for life despite the unpredictable future she must face daily as the result of MS. Also, she shows her sense of humor toward life while dealing with the harsh of the reality One of the major reasons that Nancy leads such a productive life is her gratitude. Nancy's gratitude toward the world enables her to achieve the kind of fruitful life which most of us, even without a physical disease, could have not achieved. Though living with the disease, she manages to focus on making the best out of her life. She has accomplished many things. She has pursued and received her education, educate the society about MS and depression by offering lectures in colleges to, and remain active and optimistic in the society, maintaining a close, warm, and healthy family relationship. No matter what she has, she is grateful for it. Nancy Mairs is indeed an inspiring woman. For instance, one afternoon she was going out with a friend for a drink after finishing up her school, and as they were climbing to the opposite side of her car, she tripped and fell down level and hard onto the asphalt parking lot, her sudden disappearance interrupt her friend, who was asking, " where'd you go?" he was calling her, looking for her and when he came around the back of the car, he found her hauling herself up by the door frame. Though she is a person with physical weakness, because of her gratitude for life and sense of humor in facing catastrophe, she manages to live an abundant life. Nancy's philosophy of life is that if people lose their sense of humor, the world will be difficult for them to survive. She demonstrates a good example of mind power over physical weakness. I think her if I were her friend, I would be greatly encouraged by the sense of humor. " She says that although she has been limping all her life, her families are still holding her tight, and while her children, Anne and Matthew vacuum the floor, dust furniture, haul out trash, cuff her buttons and bake her lasagnas and cookies with just enough of grumpiness, she knows that they don't have "brain fever," in which she infers that her kids are not crazy, they are simply humans, who as everybody else, would get grouchy at times when dealing with a "crippled" mom. Afterward, each time she recalls the incident, she said, "When I think of my friend talking earnestly, suddenly, to the hot thin air while I dropped from his view as though through a trap door, I find the image as silly as something from a Marx Brothers movie. Despite of the daily difficulties she has to deal with, she finds many reasons to live her life contently and happily. From above, she shows that she is grateful with what she has left and what she still capable of doing instead of lamenting what she has lost and what she can no longer do. " The incident above fully displays her humorousness as she finds silliness out of her own mistakes. Because of sense of humor, instead of blaming herself for her physical deficiency and complaining to her friends, she instead, focus on how funny must have been. I believe her humorous attitude has been helping her to not focus on the negative side of things, thus, her family lives are in harmony and that makes her life more positive.
