Economic Impact
Stadia and sports development have a large input from local and national governments. With the extra cars travelling, the pollution levels are set to rise in the Brent area when the stadium is finished. In any development or change there will be conflict but in sports its too one sided, as there are a lot more supporters than protesters.
Social Impacts
In Sri Lanka Cricket is the main sport and the city of Galle is proud to have the national stadium in their city. It is a common fact that with sports stadiums comes violence, vandalism and other aggressive nature from fans. With the huge amount of input from the government this causes conflict as many people feel the money should be spent on other sources, such as improving public transport. Money isn’t just spent on sports development and stadiums. Wembley also encounter this problem, which locals are not happy with.
Figure 5
The residents in the Sydney suburbs, where the 2000 Olympics were held, say they were unhappy with the amount of litter and noise pollution they had. But there say is very small, as the people of Brighton have voted 31,000 for and only 6,000 against the stadium. Wembley needs funds from Germany to help pay for the new stadium. With the 300,000 visitors to Sydney, many locals stayed in to avoid the huge numbers. For example in the town of Falmer, the views from their homes and nature walks will be ruined by this development. Locals feel it will make the problem worse as people will use the roads as short cuts and to avoid other traffic.
