William Wentworth
The reason that I picked William Charles Wentworth was because he was very important to the way we live today in two ways, the first was opening up new grazing lands by going over the blue mountains, but most importantly the way the government system was set up to today. William Charles Wentworth was born in 1790 Norfolk Island and died in 1872. Wentworth was educated in England at the University of Cambridge. He studied law in Sydney. Wentworth is best known for crossing the Blue Mountains in 1813 and finding new grazing lands, but he should be best known for what he did for the convicts and the development of the government systems in Australian that are still used today. He also led the convicts fight to overcome the political supremacy exercised by government officials and voluntary settlers against them. In 1842 New South Wales became the first Australian colony to be granted representative government , largely as a result of Wentworth's efforts. A member of the Legislative Council formed that same year; he helped obtain a formal constitution for the colony in 1854. Meanwhile, in 1850, he was responsible for passage of the bill founding the University of Sydney. He led the upper house of the Australian parliament in 1861. A
In 1833 there was a board which drew up the plan for the new government the chief was Wentworth him self. In this book he put forward what he thought should be in place the main thing that he should be in place was the self-rule government. As the land that they wanted was land of the kings it was handed to the legislative council they want it to be thrown out straight away so the got some one on the council to help which happened to be Wentworth. This went on for a long time until finally the New South Wales government decided that they need responsible government. It was a great discovery it took twenty-one-days, in treacherous land. Finally in 1854 Wentworth had the pleasure of seeing the law which safeguard against any rash amendments to it, as well it forced the running of the "federal assembly with power to legislate on all internal subjects"William Wentworth played a large role in helping shape Australia as we know it today. Wentworth believed very highly in the education of children . They three men were unsure whether they had actually got over the ridge but indeed the had. Really the most important thing that he did was giving the lower class people to have a chance to vote and put forward there point of view. This was shown as he played a large role in establishing the first real public schooling system in New South Wales. " After finishing his job as ministers and the Administrator of the colonies all he wished to do was to have self-government. Finally in 1846 the act went through with most of the squatters demands pasted. lthough he wanted self-rule for British colonies, as a wealthy land owner he disapproved of the growing democracy in Australia which had made it one of the most advanced political systems in the British Empire, and in 1862 he settled in England. In 1848 again wentworth was at the top of the poles after there was an up cry after the renewal of transportation laws. This was only the start to Wentworth carrier there were many great things to come from this man.
