A telemarketing manager from a dating service said, before they start their negotiation, they must screen the customer; the customer must be a stable person, successful, and single. A salesman from Yonker Nissan said that you must know your own product well. A sales woman from Honda of Seattle said, you need to be able to know how to control your behavior and attitude, and you have to know how to be a patient person. And one police officer said you have to know completely, both sides of the topic, and don't get caught by the other side not knowing what you or they are talking about. All of these answers are true for their applications, and they all have one thing in common.
             Each of the answers, if they were from a car salesman or even a telemarketer, all had one thing in common. You need to have knowledge and control in order to effectively negotiate. The number one item that you need to gain strength in a negotiation is to have knowledge. Always negotiate from a position of strength. Focus on what you can do, not what you can't. The police officer said it well when he said that you must know the situation well, and don't get caught slipping up. This is a great example of what you should do to negotiate effectively. Gain knowledge about both sides of the negotiation, and don't lie. If you lie to build strength, you will get caught, and you will lose all your strength. The sales woman from Honda approached the question from a totally different angle. She believed that you needed to be able to control your patients, attitude, and behavior. In order to be an effective negotiator you must identify a ploy to use. Ploys give great strength. These are some great ways that one can learn to have great strength to be an effective negotiator.
