GM Foods: Goodbye Halo

A hot topic as of recent has been GM (Genetically Modified) Foods and concerns have been raised about their patenting, lack of labels, and their possible unforeseen negative effects. Some people have called for the removal of GM Foods and some scream for a forward rush into them and yet almost no one is looking at its most important issue: purpose. There's a beautiful picture painted by media, rumor, and urban mythology in which companies like Monsanto and DuPont have descended from the heavens to don halos in order to feed the starving masses. Before we accept their fairy tale ending, let's take a look at the story.I am going to attempt to cut a path and showing the underlying truths, using the unimportant topics which others are so strenuously arguing. I also intend to hit on why GM Foods are being made, why people are so caught up in the debate, and eliminate the image being used to disguise GM Food industry's real intent. The GM food companies already have patents on their respective plants and crops. Monsanto is known for already taking legal actions against and defeating one farmer, Percy Schmeiser, who grew Monsanto's Round-up Ready (RR) Canola with out a license. But the circumstances surrounding the inci

Gene Grabowski, the Grocery Manufacturers of America's (GMA) vice president told reporter Thomas Lee in "Genetically Altered Food Creates Labeling Dilemma for the Industry" that "consumers would perceive [GM labels] as a warning. What makes it expensive, though, is the previous lack of labeling. China's government is providing the funds for its country's research, patents, and integration of GM Foods. Alex Kirby, a correspondent for the BBC, says in their article "GM crops find friends in China" that this philosophy also contributes to small farms seeing as how "small farmers in China have begun to aggressively adopt GM crops when permitted to do so. ' informs us of how in 1999, leaders of India's five largest farming unions interrogated Nuffield Foundation's director Anthony Tomei. If all of these people are convinced these things are safe, why are they so against labels? Do they fear that people will make a choice about what to eat dependant on if there are GM ingredients used? Isn't that lack of information a form of deception? Everything's about choice nowadays, so what drives even the FDA to defend the companies against calls for labeling? It's hard to keep the truth buried and the truth makes itself prominent in Lee's report. It's a wonder why he is willing to stand up to suggest someone else take action and too lazy to do it himself. The companies say they are worried they'll lose money and that it will cost money to put labels on GM products. It's a shame, a dirty truth, but it appears that people supporting GM Foods are asking our permission to allow them to lie, cheat, and try to swindle a buck. ] India has a surplus of food, and we have a problem of storage, not of shortage. The attitude on this loosely translates to Africans would rather starve than chance losing money. One of the Indian leaders, Manjit Kandran, said to Tomei "Perhaps you believe that India needs genetically engineered seeds, or there will be a famine? [.
