The Illusion
I watched a play "The Illusion" by Pierre Corneille on 27 of September. Pierre Corneille wrote that play on 17th century so at first thought it is kind of hard for me to understand the whole play. It was played at Russell H. Miller theatre. Actually Tony Kushner adapted the play. It was a strange comedy about and magic. It was played pretty well and I was pleased about it and the rest of audience liked it too. The play opens as a desperate father comes to a magician Alcandre for help in finding his son. The magician lives in a cave with his servant. Years before, the father's rigid expectations forced the boy from home, now the old man regrets his rashness. The magician decides to help him and shows three scenes about his son's life. In the first vision the son is a penniless young and altruistic swain smitten by love of a lady he worships from afar and that's all what happened in first scene. In the second, the son is a manservant of his nobleman rival who is secretly courting the lady because of her wealth, while bedding the maid. He is imprisoned for killing the nobleman rival in a duel. The maid arranges his escape and his union with her lady at the cost of the lady's entire fortune. The lady's faith in he
As most of as are expecting good ending for the play because the play was filled with romance and love but it didn't happened. A good example is the father who was really interested finding his son and feeling guilty about his leaving. So I really started to understand what this play was all about after I had watched it. If the audience have known this fact the hole play would have been meaningless. When there was act where only the cave was Toompuu3important then all the lights were lightening the cave and the rest of the stage was dark and other way around. Although as a big picture I liked the play. But after he had find out his son's profession he is not intersted in him anymore, saying "being actor is not a real job," and suddenly all his love is gone. The lady Toompuu2witnesses the stabbing, is overcome, and dies. What confuses me the most was the son's names what changed in every scene. Also very important for me was the fact that I could hear everything they said. It was really hard at first to understand that everything is illusion there but i think that was one of the ideas about this play. All the other actors were dressed like people in the 17th century. The thing what made this play special was the ending.
