Alexander Graham Bell
Alexander Graham Bell was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on March 3rd 1847. After Bell's two brothers died of tuberculosis, and he was threatened by the disease himself, his family moved to Ontario, Canada in 1870. They moved to a spacious farmhouse in and he called it "his dreaming place". In 1872 they moved to the United States, and Bell became a professor of vocal physiology at Boston University. In 1882, he became a U.S. citizen. Despite the fact, that he came from Scotland and gained U.S. citizenship later on, he is considered one of the most famous Canadians ever, especially since he spent a lot of time there.At the age of 14, he and his brother created a machine consisting of some sort of mouth, throat, nose, tongue, and lungs which actually produced human-like sounds. In 1919, the HD-4 model set a new world speed record at that time (114 km/h). The Bell Telephone Company was founded in 1877, based on the invention of Bell's telephone and since it was the only telephone company at that time, it had some interesting nicknames: The Bell System, a. Bell introduced his invention at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876. He also helped found the Science magazine in 1880, he was president of the National Geographic Society from 1898 to 1904, and was made a regent of the Smithsonian Institution in 1898. The hydrofoil principle is still in use today. He came to this idea at his parent's residence (in Canada) and when upgrading the harmonic telegraph, the telephone. Bell also designed and patented the tetrahedron kite consisting mainly of elements of geometrical shapes. Together with a group of other enthusiast, he also invented the hydrofoil, a new form of speedboat. In 1899, the American Telephone and Telegraph (AT&T) became the parent company of the Bell System. Bell was active in many fields and invented a number of devices, including the photophone which transmitted speech via light waves, and of course the telephone. By 1900, Bell Telephone had situated over 800,000 phones in America.
