Europeans vs the Native Americans
1) Discuss the clash of cultures between the European and the Native Americans. What were the similarities and what were the differences? The Native Americans outnumbered the colonists so why didn't they drive the Europeans from the Atlantic coastline. Any general lessons to be drawn? The pre-Columbian Indian civilizations consisted of the Mayas, Toltecs, Astecs, Incas, and other Indians. Remnants of stone choppers and scrapers that were discovered suggest that the Indians used these items for spears and arrows. (Tindall, pg. 7) The Indians were not domesticated, they used their hunting skills to kill their prey and bring it home to their families. As the Indians began to settle in more permanent or semi permanent villages, they began to invent more domesticated items such as fiber snares, basketry, mills for grounding nuts, and domesticated the dog and turkey. (Tindall, pg. 7) The Indians began to consume more plant foods that became the staples of the New World: chiefly maize, which is Indian corn, squash, chili peppers, avocados, and pumpkins. (notes, 1/29) Jury, the right to confront, and the freedom of speech gave them the right of a fair trial. The New World was a free place, but it still needed some discipline. (notes, 1/29) The Proprietary forms did not last because of the lack of government being involved and everyone trying to fend for themselves. 29) The Indians that survived the epidemics and refused to give up their lands were often dislodged by force. They conducted many rituals, ceremonies, and taboos in acknowledgment of their gods. 79) The Europeans viewed natural resources as privately owned commodities to be sold for profit. (notes, 1/29) The whole intend on giving each person 5 acres of land was to obtain more money. (notes, 1/24) Proprietors were people who settled areas intending only on making money. There were no taxes being passes in order to help out the colonies. The British were coming to the New World for money, they were poor and wanted to achieve success.
