My First day in Kindergarte

It was my first day in kindergarten. I didn’t understand why I had to come to this place away from my home where my mommy and daddy never left me alone. My mom drove me to this building and took me inside and left me with a lady I had never seen before in my life. I started crying because I didn’t know why my mom would leave me with a stranger. She said it’ll be ok and she’ll come back to get me in a few hours. My brother was just next door in a class known as the first grade. I wanted to go to the class my brother was in.

I started crying and they took me to my brother. He asked me why I was crying when mommy was going to be back in about 3 hours and until then I can play games and eat ice cream. So I stopped crying and they took me back to my kindergarten class. I was introduced to Sally, Michelle, and Kevin who seemed to be having the time of their life coloring. I joined them and I found that being at this place was not so bad after all.

The teacher started to show us letters of the alphabet, and I wondered why we needed so many letters. She told us that in English, we read and write from left to right. I found this very weird because I had been taught to read Urdu and Arabic fro

. . .

On the way back, my brother made fun of me because I had come to him crying and my mom told him to stop making fun of his sister because he cried the first day of kindergarten also. But my parents never made a mistake, so how could that be true?

Well, that was my first day of my lifelong education, as my dad says. Plus, we never sleep at home during the day, so I didn’t know why you have to at school. She yelled at me because we’re Muslim and we’re not supposed to eat pig, and I told her it was not pig, it was a hotdog. We did not know what to say because we can’t lie, so we just remain quiet. So I asked the teacher if I may go to the bathroom down the hall and she sends me with two other students who also needed to go. At home, mom gave me rice and chicken. I wished they wouldn’t trick me into eating pork and that I could draw and color better than other people in my class. I was hoping the next day would be a better day and I hoped I could somehow make it to the bathroom everyday during naptime. My mom asked me what I had to eat, and I said hotdogs. I was one of the fastest learners in my class, and I wondered why it was so hard for these other kids to memorize a few letters and learn how to speak them when that’s what they did at home all day anyway.

It was nap time and I didn’t feel like sleeping; it was like a punishment. m right to left, but I kind of started understanding it anyway. I don’t know if that’s possible because my brother never cries, but I guess it’s true because my brother immediately stopped making fun of me.
