A Worn Path

Old Paths In the story, A Worn Path, Eudora Welty portrays the hardship that a black elderly woman faces in the early nineteen hundreds. The story is based around an elderly woman named Phoenix Jackson. It deals with her long travel to the town store and the great ordeal she faces when coming along to meet a young white hunter in the woods. It may look as if this hunter has no real compassion for the elderly, but Phoenix on the other hand, just takes his rough approach as if it means nothing. In many ways, he comes off as a bigot; He feels that black people only travel long distance for self reward. With many journeys comes obstacles that just try to slow you down. Phoenix had just crossed over the log with her eyes closed shut and her cane leading the way. As Phoenix laid upon the cold winter ground, she reached out for a hand only to find air. The young white hunter approached her, as if he meant her no harm. He then called out ?Granny?, but he grabbed her up and swung her around in the air like she was a toy. Afterwards he let out a great big laugh and then asked ? Anything Broken Granny?? All he was really trying to do was intimidate her, bu

?Well, sacred him off that time,? he said. Phoenix Jackson learned this the hard way. The most important thing we must all learn is that with age comes superior wisdom. After the hunter off with the dogs she grabbed the nickel and tuck it down her apron. He brought all the fear he could but she took it all and his money too. ? In itself this is the law of nature. He is referring to her as if she was old as time. She could see it as a treat on her life when the huntersays ?you take my advice and stay home, and nothing will happen to you. He just proves more and more to be a bigot. In the end she did not have any guilt. The true feelings of someone comes out in their word. This is something he has been doing from the first encounter. Then he makes a rude remark to Phoenix ?I know you old colored people! wouldn?t miss going to town to see Santa Claus!?.
