Gertrude Stein Tender Buttons
In the novel "Tender Buttons," Gertrude Stein plays with language using her unconventional writing style. It appears that Gertrude is using words in an abstract way as she express her voice through fragmented language. In my opinion, she uses very short and simple descriptions in explaining certain objects, food and rooms. I believe that Stein use objects to describe the things in life that are in our lives, some things are necessary in life's survival and others provide pleasures. Secondly, I believe that Stein's use of food in her novel shows how food is necessary in life, but most importantly it is nourishment for our bodies, (mental state). Stein gives clear, simple pictures how food items relate to human processing. Finally, I believe Stein does a good job explaining "rooms," through the different sizes, colors, shapes, and changes in position. She is masterful as she moves through time using repetition in the opening sentences of her paragraphs on pages 70 through 73. I will use s
" Picasso's paintings were fragmented on canvas, as though he was telling a story through his works. Stein used the abstract processing of thought and a mirror into the psychological thought. Once again, we see a type of mathematical functioning in her writing style, as she uses language in a symbolic manner. Objects appear to be a type of tool used by Stein to show various objects and their correlation to her life. " (P 41) It appears to me that Stein is trying to show her readers that over a period of time we are changed due to the fragmentation of life's circumstances. She brings simple language to life using the description of objects, food and rooms. In "Tender Buttons," Stein uses expression through a type of fragmented of consciousness of ones inner association of life. " (P 67) It appears that Stein is contrasting how rooms are divided into parts, the positioning of objects placed in the room and that each make-up in the wholeness of the room. In this novel, "Food" seems to give the notion that Stein's writing style is becoming more descriptive. The definition of a glass refers to an object with no color and can be seen through with the naked eye. " (P 9) This sub-title appears to show all the descriptions of a glass. For example, she writes; "If comparing a piece that is a size but a piece, comparing a piece with what is not recognized but what is used as it is held by holding, comparing these two comes to be repeated. Perhaps, Gertrude is trying to show how the content of rooms are like consciousness into our own lives.
