When it comes to Homo sapiens, or modern day humans we are just a blink of an eye in evolutionary time, since we have remained unchanged for about 50,000 years. The great apes such as the Mountain Gorilla are the only animals on earth that resembles modern day humans, with a genetic difference of only 1.8 percent in the DNA sequence. Mountain Gorillas spend the majority of their day eating and are primarily vegetarians, eating many types of plants including roots and stems of plants such as wild celery, thistles, and the tender shoots of bamboo. Another advantage that distinguishes mountain gorillas from other animals is their skeletal system. Bamboo shoots are available only a few months of the year, usually, between August and December and will only visit the forests when fresh shoots are available. The rich volcanic soil of the Virungas is highly valued for agriculture. Their impressive size and power coupled with incredible agility and nimbleness gives the silverback gorilla considerable self-protective advantages over other primates andor predators. n time dominated the African wilderness, has become the most endangered species in all of Africa. Nevertheless the mountain gorilla has the beginnings of a frontal cortex, which gives them an even greater edge over other animals in their environment. Mountain gorillas typically live in a habitat anywhere from three to 12 square kilometers of lush African rainforest. Mountain Gorillas form very strong attachments to members of their own group. They rely on the security of the densely packed forests of their habitat and will seldom be seen venturing down into the open, such as farmlands and valley's. Ultimately, the mountain gorilla is a fascinating and truly extraordinary creature. Although Rwanda, Uganda and Congo have stressed the importance of keeping Virunga region for wildlife conservation human encroachment continues to deteriorate their natural environment. The design of their skeleton in contrast to other animals gives mountain gorillas an advantage like none other.
