Sexual Harassment in Japan
Today, sexual harassment in Japan is a serious problem which we must not ignore.According to a 1991 survey, about half of working women were victims of sexual harassment(Lemmon-Kishi, 1996).Another survey shows that about three-fourths of Japanese women have been sexual harassed(Macgregor, 1995).The definition of sexual harassment is any sexual actions, speech or situation that makes men or women feel unpleasant and makes uncomfortable surroundings (Lemmon-Kishi, 1996). Particularly, sexual harassment toward women is a serious problem, because it is hard for women to consult with others about it. Today, we can see sexual harassment everywhere; in offices, in schools, and on trains and buses. For instance, groping women on the train, unwanted touching, saying a sexual joke. Especially, I think that sexual harassment in an office is really serious because there is a relation of employment. For example, when a boss in an office is sexual harassed, if a women employee refuses it, she wouldn't be able to be promoted or would be fired. Additionally, sexual harassment harms companies' images and decreses their sales. Mitsubishi Motor Manufactu
Therefore, men don't think that their words and acts are sexual harassment. Mitsubishi, for instance, makes the special manual and holds a two-hour long seminar about sexual harassment. The second cause is discrimination against women. This seminar teaches them concrete cases and prevention of sexual harassment. Another example, Nippon Motorola obligates managers to attend regular four-hour long group sessions to study sexual harassment (Japan Times, 1998). The solution for that main cause is that companies should educate sexual harassment throughly to their employees. Therefore, Japanese companies have no policies for solving sexual harassment in the office. suffered a loss of millions of dollars in sexual harassment problems because the National Organization for Women boycotted Mitsubishi's products (Elstrom & Brull, 1996). The main cause of sexual harassment is that men don't aware of what sexual harassment is. Another solution is that companies set up a consultation room. Sexual harassemnt is a problem which it is hard to consult with others for women. Many managers, who have loyalty to their companies, don't understand about sexual harassment, and though they worry about it, they think of it as fun (Japan Times, 1998). For example, a victim talkes over with a person in the personal department, and a victim or a harasser transfer to another department (Takeuchi, 1990). She, however, feels that this question is uncomfortable.
