The Lothian Run novel essay

Recently, I have read "The Lothian Run" by "Mollie Hunter," a historical novel set in 1736. It has a well paced plot and an exciting main character. Sandy Maxwell is a lawyer in training in Edinburgh, who at the start of the book is wanting to leave his path to being a lawyer in exchange for something more exciting. One day, after a fight with the lawyer he is apprenticed to, an important looking man walks into the office. Before long Sandy is asked by the man (Deryck Gilmour a special investigations officer) to try and find out as much as he can about George Robertson, a known smuggler who has escaped from prison. This simple task however, goes drastically wrong and suddenly Sandy is swept into a dangerous, full scale investigation of his case. One of the most exciting moments in the book was one the first mission that Sandy undertook. He was sent merely to inquire for any mention of George Robertson at Prestonpans. However, his curiosity gets the better of him when he meets "an honest horse thief" who is slightly linked with the case of George Robertson. He goes beyond the requirements of his duties and follows the man, named Rattray, to a deserted valley. However, he ends up caught, and kept in captivity in a small hu

For example, when Sandy first meets Rob Gierson, Rob is introduced through dialogue:"'Right, Rob,' said Sandy, 'Where do you want me to start?'"This dialogue is used before we even know anything about Rob, yet it serves as a good way of introducing him because it shows that Sandy is on friendly terms with him and he knows him fairly well. It is here where he plans his escape. He develops most of the main characters through their actions and their dialogue. He is then made sound very appealing as a hero to the reader when he is described:"Moving with lightning speed, as if some demon ofcool intelligence had taken charge of him"This is one of the first instances in the book when he demonstrates his coolness in the face of danger and his adventurous edge. He is sure he does not want to continue with his career as a lawyer but does not know what else would suit him. It brings back memories to David of when he was a child growing up around there. The dash is used to show (even though Sandy is interrupted) that he could go on and on about the topic. It is a long sentence of direct speech to show that Sandy is becoming emotional and the information is flooding out. In a later part of the book, Sandy returns to complete the original mission which he was sent to do - inquire about George Robertson and any news of smuggling among the secretive fishermen of Prestonpans. This part of the book gives us an early idea that Sandy is not suited for the pokerfaced job of lawyer and is more suited to some other profession. He did not always get every thing right - it was made clear throughout that he was still learning from his lawyer and, even more so, from Gilmour. Sandy, in this instance, gives a correct reply and Gilmour praises him for it. This action sequence adds a more exciting edge to the book which had, before this point, been setting the scene for what was to come. It is exciting and clever at the same time. A sad part in the book is when Sandy is describing the execution of Drew Wilson and he says: "Captain Porteous lost his temper and ordered the soldiers to fire a volley of arrows at the crowd, and then-"This shows the very gritty side of Edinburgh as it takes place at a hanging where a riot breaks out.
