Middle Road Between Christians on Harry Potter? The release of the Harry Potter film sustained a craze produced by J.K. Rowling's novel, Harry Potter. Within this craze developed two separate extremist groups founded in the Christian community on whether or not Harry Potter is a negative and unholy influence on the juvenile audience it was targeted to. The first group condemns Harry Potter for being a pagan attack against their children, while the other sees Harry Potter as not only non-threatening but also a source of Christian virtue. The problem with both is that neither addresses the situation with a solution that looks at all of the aspects and concerns surrounding the problem. By digesting both sides of the argument a middle-line can be drawn between them that becomes a more sensible solution to the debate about the value of Harry Potter in children's lives.Many parents are able to simply enjoy the fact that their children are reading and getting involved with a literary work, however many other parents are quick to scorn the popularity of the Potter craze and find the works to be an unholy and pagan attack on their youth. By looking at the sorcery in Potter in this manner it is easy to see that the magic as harmless and not necessarily the same magic that the Bible warns against. By placing Potter in the same category as previous tales that contained magic and fantasy that were not considered cultic one can comfortably accept Potter as a non threatening force. From this view the sorcery of Potter can be seen as anti Christian. By comparing Potter's magic and fantasy to previous tales directed at a juvenile audience, such as Beauty and the Beast, King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, Cinderella, Aesop's Fables, and C. This argument is only strengthened when one considers the fact that a majority of the magic in Potter is not merely a fantastic creation by J. Those in favor of Potter also praise the fact that it has brought the joy of reading back to today's youth. However a more liberal view of the situation allows for discretion on whether or not Potter breaks any Christian guidelines on sorcery and magic. The anti Potter camp builds their argument upon the biblical verse, Deuteronomy 18: 10 that states, "let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire , who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spell"(The Holy Bible). Although it may seem very innocent and insignificant it should be taken seriously and parents should carefully decide how far the Harry Potter craze carries into their child's lives. If left unattended to it is this curiosity that can have the potential to lead to the acceptance and even glorification of pagan ideals, fulfilling the fears of the anti-Potter extremist. However those who promote Harry Potter fail to see the potential dangers from such a film. From this viewpoint they take a very conservative approach claiming that Harry Potter embodies these detestable traits in such a manner that they are harmful to viewers.
