Censorship - The Enemy of Freedom

Censorship is the examination of material for objectionable matters. It is used to keep material from influencing people the wrong way. Different people often see things differently. Under pressure, political and social systems are suppressing creative thoughts. This is being brought against the educational system, radios, internet, television, theater arts, and visual arts. Usually, the attacks fall under the categories of language, sex, drugs, society and race, and inappropriate adolescent behavior. Some believe that it is a necessity to keep the children safe by not exposing them to such elements, as replication of behavior is feared. Others argue that censorship prevents students from seeing "the real world."
The world is filled with nasty things, and most parents try to shield them from the outside world. But the question is, does this really help? The average elementary school student knows a lot of things. They are influenced by the television, the internet, friends, school, etc. What they read or see, or hear does not necessarily mean that they will follow it. When discussions of sexuality are cut off, you are becoming ignorant of one of the most crucial areas of human behavior. Sex has to be talked about. Teenagers should know everything there is to know about sex. The information that is discussed can save lives and prevent far more extreme consequences. Children have to deal with issues even more extreme than seeing an act of sexual activity, for instance. Many face gang violence in the streets and abuse right in the home. They need guidance, explanations, advice, and assurance. This is a method that differs from government censorship as it leaves you with a choice. You have responsibility for yourself. Government censorship takes your freedom away and puts it in the hands of others that misuse the power to repress your own personal values. Censorship attacks a person's ability to hear ideas and judge for themselves.
