Those Winter Sundays

Some people say that with the birth of a new life someone must go with god to take it's place and in the past few years I've had my fair share births and deaths. In the past few years I have also learned a lot of things about myself and the type of family I come from to better appreciate the new support system I have found in my aunt Joy. We have always been close and many people in our family say that we look and act a lot but it was not until the summer of 2000 that we became more than niece and aunt but friends.
It was June 2000 and the sound of my aunts voice radiated through her large 3-level home in suburban Durham, North Carolina. The smell country sausage and fried eggs that sizzled through the kitchen and upstairs into the master bathroom. She was calling me to come down and put our bags in the car since it was her weekend to babysit her grand children in Charlotte. She finished making our breakfast on the run and we hit the highway. All in all it was an okay weekend I was able to bond with my relatives and plan for the addition to our family. The plan was for us to leave Charlotte early so that my aunt could drop me off in Greensboro with her youngest daughter to hang out. We hug and kiss goodbye and she hits the highway alone. After i got somewhat settled in cousins brand new 3-bedroom house the phone begins to ring. And on the other end my aunt joy is on the other end telling us that she found my uncle nick on the couch having a seizure. We jump in the car and head for Duke hospital Center which and when we reach the emergency room and as a surprise my aunt was calm. I didn't know at that time that they same calmness she showed in the hospital would be the one thing gives me the strength to do what I have to overcome obstacles in my own life.
