The society created in the Orwellian classic, 1984, is a true depiction of the present society, revealed through Orwell's ideas of surveillance, propaganda, and slavery. These three concepts are found within 1984 as well as present day 2004, giving society an insight on the way the present has turned out to be, deprived from freedom. Although Orwell's prediction of the year 1984 did not necessarily come to reality at that point in time, it eventually came true in the present year, 2004.
             The amount of surveillance in today's society is so enormous, which explains the many ways by which society is being watched, just like the society in 1984 is being watched by "Big Brother" (1). Now days, almost every single public place has cameras spread all over, where every single move one makes can be watched. These surveillance cameras relate to the telescreens from 1984, where "it was conceivable that [Big Brother] watched everybody all the time" (24). The advancement in technology has caused phones to have the ability to be "tapped" at anytime without knowing so, which means that a conversation over the phone could be heard from beginning to end when something is found suspicious within a person. Society has that natural feeling within them of being watched, and though they may think they are not, they really are in some unknown way.
             Propaganda is seen through out 1984, as well as all over in the present time. Every commercial, advertisement, etc. is all propaganda, just to make people buy something that may often be either useless or unworthy of its price. When a weight loss supplement is advertised on television, those who feel uncomfortable about their weight, stare stunningly at the commercial with a desire to make a phone call right away and buy the product, which is the exact purpose of propaganda, to brainwash society into buying products.
