The film Meet me in St.Louis portrays an old family environment in which the roles are your typical stereotypes of the time period. Throughout the movie the individual roles are defined to the viewer. The whole control of the family revolves around the father figure and what he says goes. The Smith family is a cohesive family and would stick together no matter what circumstances might emerge.
Esther Smith was the main character in Meet me in St.Louis. Being the middle sister she looked out for her younger sisters. Tootie came back from being outside and was crying. She claimed that John Truett had hit her with his car and then took off. Esther was taken back by this not believing that John would do something like this. Even though she had feelings for John the importance of family was far more important. This caused her to go right over to John's house and yell at him. Of course yelling was not enough as she hit him and then went back home only to find a surprise. This surprise being that Esther found out that Tootie's story was not true. Esther felt terrible about what she had done to John.
The relationship between Esther and John was your customary relationship. John Truett was the attractive neighbor who Esther fell in love with the moment she saw him. They were introduced at her family's party and flirted back and forth with him. At the end of the night there were no signs of affection shown because that would not have been proper. They end up going on many different dates throughout the movie. When Esther finds out that she has to move to St.Louis she is upset that she will have to leave the one behind that she loves. In the end Esther does not have to move and she and John are to be married.
