"RRRCHCHCH...RRRCHCHCH...RRRrrr!" "Great, just great" I yelled as I slammed my hands against the steering wheel of my Toyota HiLux, which had just given up on me. Steam slowly began to emerge from beneath the bonnet. I reached for my phone and dialed the RCI help line, but all I got were some annoying beeps and the message "emergency services only", "Well I think this classifies as an emergency!" I said to myself quietly. I was now running 20 minutes late for a meeting with a well paying client's associates, to investigate some land he was interested in buying near El Azizia in Libya. Now that air-conditioner's cool air was beginning to succumb to the sweltering 57°(C) heat, I figured I had two choices. Either wait here until my phone picked up a signal or until someone came by (unlikely) or begin to walk, it couldn't be more than 10km. I decided on the second option, so I grabbed my phone, my drink bottle and my keys, turned the handle, opened the door and stepped out into the desert. Instantly the heat of the desert assaulted my face, causing my lips to dry quickly. I reached back into the Toyota to grab my sunglasses and cap then set off.
From my watch I guessed I had been walking for 30 minutes. I reached for my water bottle and drank the last few drops. I continued to walk until in the distance I saw something, a cactus. I sighed, hoping it was a person, so I continued to walk, past the cacti.
I now began to reconsider my choice of leaving my car, I looked back in that direction, but the cactus was gone, that was weird. I also just remembered something I had seen on discovery channel, that cacti only grow in North America... very weird. At least an hour had passed now and I was beginning to get a headache and felt as if I would pass out at any moment, and very soon, I did.
