Earth may look like a wonderful place, but is it as wonderful as it appears to be. Today's society focuses on things that are not really important; things that we can live without; and we are all about personal gain, instead of helping others. Being human in 2004, is just as Peter Menzel stated in Women in the Material World. We are indeed materialistic. In developed countries, being human concentrates deeply on social status, economic wealth, and education. Do not get me wrong, I am not saying any of these things are bad, but what about people in under-developed nations. What can we as human beings, do to help?
             In 2004, we would rather help ourselves, rather than help someone who actually needs our help. How has the world come to this! One of the great things about being human in 2004 is that women of all races have a voice. We can speak our minds; express ourselves; and not worry about what someone else says. Women can be educated, and we do not have to be homemakers unless we choose to do so. Women can stand-alone. We do not need a man to give us meaning. In Women in the Material World, it states that most of the world has a voice and it is women. Women have been hiding behind men, but now we can be recognized and accounted for as an individual.
             In this century, we care more about what kind of jeans we are wearing, and what kind of shoes we have on; rather than whether others are even having a simple meal. Humans in 2004, take all of the Earth's natural resources for granted. We continue to destroy rainforests and pollute the air despite all of the warnings we get about the ozone layer. We are a careless generation.
             Humans today are not selfish, we just do not think about other's situations. There are many times when my mom makes dinner, and instead of eating it, I throw it in the trash.
