Have you ever wanted to be someone that you aren't? In Esther Dyson's essay "The Anonymous Voice" Dyson states that anonymity can have positive and negative affects in a person's life. Anonymity has a way of making good people not so good and bad people even worse. People have been posing anonymously for centuries through sending unsigned letter and phone calls but anonymity has become more obvious to the public through the invention of the internet. Anonymity in all respects has both positive and negative affects on the world.
Anonymity gives people an easy way to hide, it gives a safer place to explore your fantasies or ask questions. It also gives people a way to talk about there everyday experiences and torments or let them explore things that they once hoped they could be. Dyson says that if she had access to the internet when she was younger she might have rebelled while being anonymous instead of rebelling while in college. It would have given her a better link to the outside world without actually being in the middle of it. One of the most used and approved forms of anonymity is voting. You can vote and no one will ever know what you voted for unless you decided to disclose this information. There are many anonymous communities that use there anonymity to discuss important subjects such as addictions, diseases, fear, etc. One example of an anonymous community is "Internet Oracle," which is place where you can email questions and the questions are then forwarded to another anonymous person for an answer. According to David Sewell of Oracle, "Anonymity provides two crucial advantages: freedom of self-expression, and the shared aesthetic illusion of an Oracle persona."
