I stood at the doorway of the Boing747 jumbo jet, unsure that I even wanted to enter. As I was ushered to my seat, I was aware of people chatting, seat belts clicking, and flight attendants closing the overhead luggage compartments. The scene made me dizzy. In a state of semi-shock, I slumped into my seat. As I stared out the window, visions of recent events overtook me. My life was changing after the flight departed from Canton airport in China.
I was moving to Seattle to meet my parents. We only stayed for total a few months since they moved to Seattle in 1992. Although I was excited, I felt a deep sadness at leaving the place I had grown to call home. Even with my parents and my sister waiting to welcome me, my heart seemed empty. My mind buzzed with thoughts of leaving all of my friends and my bustling hometown. I couldn't imagine what would be happened on me in a society of different language and culture.
I was still chaotically thinking about my past and my future when the plane landed at Seattle International Airport. Looking out of the window, watching the sky, it wasn't like the moment at 4:00 o'clock in the afternoon (the arrival time on the ticket is 4:00pm). I started to be anxious due to my limited English. I looked at the lady sitting next to me, pointing to my wrist, opening my rigid mouth and said,
"Excuse me, could you tell me what time it is right now?"
"11:45", with a friendly smile.
I couldn't believe what I heard. I had really arrived in Seattle 4 hours early. I didn't think my parents would be at the airport much early.
I followed the stream of people who were getting off the flight, just thinking how I could get hold of my parents. Walking aimlessly, I saw different races of people passing by me with large and small luggage. At that time, I realized I needed to claim my luggage.
