Communication Process

             Every day of our lives we communicate with different people and our methods and effectiveness of doing so differ depending on the individual, the circumstance and the degree to which we are interested. "Communication is the process of sending and receiving messages with attached meaning" (Schermerhorn & Hunt & Osborn, 2000, p. 335), and can be both verbal and non-verbal. In this 'Information Age' we live in, increasing efforts are being made to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of information transfer: communication. There are various tools used to communicate: telephones, faxes, e-mails and many more. However, regardless of the tool being used the effectiveness of the process lies ultimately with the individual.
             We all have our strengths and weaknesses, and in an attempt to identify our weaknesses, each member of our group consulted with co-workers, family and friends. We were in some cases shocked at the feedback received. However, further analysis showed how these assessments tied into our personal profiles, which were previously arrived at using the DISC Analysis Test. Jackie's influence profiles were shown in her habitual interruption and needing to be heard. Elizabeth's assessment as a conscientious objective thinker is shown in her caution before speaking and lack of tolerance for anything she cannot see as being logical. Arlene had a very high score in avoidance, which reflected in her distaste for conflict. Louie's conscientious practitioner profile weakness is impatience. (Inscape Publishing, Inc., p. 7)
             Jackie, after speaking with her husband and co-workers regarding her communication skills, has come to the conclusion that she interrupts speakers.
