POEM

             Deep in my throat I knew something terrible
             To find it had been turned into a spectacle
             Ran her down and in one hateful swoop
             Took away all that was good and true
             in an I guess I'm crazy kind of way
             While his lawyers in their plastic suits
             Spoke of plea bargains and a suspended sentence for the youth
             I tried to remember a friend whose hate was so small
             With a dance and a smile that none could resist
             Laughter that calmed even the tightest fist
             At the funeral I couldn't believe
             Held all that was left of beautiful Ruthie
             The most terrible I've heard yet
             Reached down to my soul and squeezed out all there was to get
             And so we began the terrible ceremony
             As over the grave we poured fists of fresh ground
             And as the pieces of her made their way down
             The reporters swarmed like flies on a hound
             Nothing I though to say could make it right
