Suspense -Examined in the Film Rafifi

             Suspense is a main element in many films. Whether it's in a Heist film or Romance film suspense is often central to the plot and development. After all, suspense is a bit like uneasy uncertainty and indecision but it can also be character driven like Memento and also object driven like in Jaws. Rififi uses suspense really well. It would be a good idea to use Rififi as an example of suspense. But how is this suspense created and followed through throughout the film?
             Suspense in Rififi is generated by objects, characters and events. The suspense in the events is evident when the heist is taking place. The suspense in this instance is generated by the chance that they might or might not complete their crime. This suspense is underlined by noise created or lack of noise, for the duration of them attempting to get inside and crack the safe. All you hear is the tapping on the floor, breathing, muffled coughs, the foam from the fire extinguisher and of course, the screeching of the drills drilling into the safe. Also people, note something special that happens which ends up ruining their 'perfect plan' which is of course when Cesar the safe cracker takes that ring.
             Another event that causes the suspense is when Jo le Suedois (Carl Möhner) is sitting around waiting to take the money to get his son back. But dragging this on and glimpsing back to see Jo, this builds more suspense. The climax of the film and where a lot of suspense is created is when Tony has the child but Jo goes to take the money. The suspense in created because you know just that little bit more than the characters and you know what's going to happen but they don't, this could be used as a meaning of the word suspense. This gets people more into the film and gets them to predicting what is going to happen. Sometimes films make you think that something is going to happen but it goes off into a tangent which is completely different to what
