illigan raised the ethical debate about the differences between male and female morality when she published 'In a Different Voice' as a major criticism of Kohlberg's work. She argued Kohlberg's six stages of development have an inherent bias toward the male perspective because his model assumes moral maturity involves a rule oriented, objective, even handed conception of justice. Gilligan protested that women have a different conception of morality to men. It encompasses a morality of responsibility in which women approach difficult moral decisions situationally and in response to the needs and relationships of the people involved. Her concern was that as males generally express justice based values more than females, by implication females are morally inferior (Caputo, 2000; White, 1999, Peterson, 1996). Gilligan believed Kohlberg's work was flawed because it focused exclusively on males and did not provide any valid understanding of the moral development of females (Caputo, 2000).
