ffect chain relies on devices that control the plot time, such as a deadline and an appointment. Hitchcock uses two devices in order to create tension in the audience. The first of which is the deadline of Thorwald's departure. Jeff states that "[Thorwald's] got everything he owns laid out over there in the bedroom waiting to be packed." The other device used is an appointment. Before anything can be done concerning Thorwald's departure, Lieutenant Doyle must arrive at Jeff's residence. Once Doyle arrives and inquires as to what Jeff "has" on Thorwald, Jeff expresses, "enough to scare me you wouldn't show up in time and we'd lose him."
