In the United States, more than 65 million people are currently living with an incurable sexually transmitted disease. ( SIECUS) An additional 15 million people infected with one or more STDs each year, roughly half of whom contract lifelong infections. (SEICUS) Most people are unaware of who has these diseases, and people who have them are unaware that they have them also. In the United States, an estimated 15.3 million new cases of sexually transmitted diseases occur each year, at least one- fourth of them among teenagers ( NIAID).
             When STDs were discovered in the 1960s, there were only two known diseases, syphilis, and Gonorrhea. In the 1970s, one in every forty-seven adolescents contracted a sexually transmitted disease. (Marnie) Today, that figure is one in four. (Marnie) Later in the 1980s, HIV was discovered in India. It was found in the Urban parts of India such as Bombay, Madras, and Bangalore (Marnie). These diseases rapidly spread along the border regions near Burma where drug use is widespread and along the trunk roads that serve as a transport network (Marnie). In 1981, these STDs began to pop up in New York and other major import/ export states.
             Sexually transmitted diseases are becoming an epidemic, especially among teens. Most teens become sexually active between the ages of twelve and nineteen. (SEICUS) Teens at this age should be focused on their education and not on sex. In cases like these, diseases can be spread easily because there is more time to come in contact with the disease again and spread it to another partner. Teens makeup ten percent of the American population and carry twenty to twenty- five percent of all STDs in the United States. One out of every ten teenagers already has an STD. Most teens think that using condoms make sex safe. Studies show that using condoms one hundred percent of the time during sex only reduce the risk of getting an STD by fifty percent. (Marnie)
