An Investigation into Species Diversity

en an organism learns not to respond to repeated occurances of a stimulus.
Located at the heart of the University Campus, Lake Alice is a haven for birds, students and visitors alike. One of the main attractions is the diverse group of birds present in the area, when at sunset especially, many come to roost on the island trees of Lake Alice. Research on human disturbance and its consequent effect on diversity is therefore important, not only for ecological sustainability, but in terms of aesthetic and economic stability also. Examples of previous studies studying human impact on diversity are numerous, such as studies in Armenia, noting the effects of human disturbance on waterbird diversity (Balian 20002). Data from past years could allow comparisons with current data to see general trends in increased/decreased species diversity and changes in species type and number. This data could be used for inference making or contrasted with other lakes in the area, such as Lake Walberg. This experiment specifically concentrates on the 3 islands in Lake Alice. It is predicted that the larger of the 3 islands (east islands) is likely to have the highest species diversity not only due to its larger size, but also because it is furthest from the shore compared to the smaller islands which are also located in close proximity to the shore (the ¡®middle¡¯ and ¡®west¡¯ isles) and are likely to be affected by human disturbance. A large island would predictably have a larger bird population and bird diversity, due to a larger potential habitat and a variety of niches available for a numerous and diverse set of bird species.
The site of study was Lake Alice; a large man-made lake at the heart of the University of Florida campus, Gainesville, Florida. The lake contained three main island; East Island, Middle Island and West Island (see fig 1). The subjects to be studied were any bird which inhabited/landed on a particular isla...
