Dr. Seaward is a doctor who took care of Lucy; he thinks the professor has gone mad. The professor tells him: "But even yet I do not expect you to believe. It is so hard to accept at once any abstract truth, that we may doubt such to be possible when we have always believed 'no'" (265). As people forget about it they stop thinking about the fact that evil exists in that form where they live and then it returns unrepressed, it is free to do what it wants until it is again repressed.
