Merlin knew that Arthur would one day become King and needed to guide him through his childhood without him knowing who he really was. Because Arthur did not know he was a prince, he was more open minded and eager to learn from his mentor, Merlin. Merlin turned him into various animals and sent him to learn about how they lived and operated. He learned the different types of ruling, how to be a fair leader, and how different animals regarded the human race. These teaching would later prove priceless in his kingship.
