It is in the opinion of feminist Shulamith Firestone that "biological inequality of the sexes is the root of subordination of women." (Firestone, 1970) She has put a feminist twist on Marx and Engels materialist theory of history. In doing so, she likens reproduction to production and claims that women must seize control of reproduction just as the proletariat must seize the means of production to eliminate the class system. In women's case, the sexual class system, not the economy as would the proletariat. Firestone calls for an androgynous society where all roles of sex are eliminated. Due to technological advances such as in-vitro fertilization, "a woman who begets a child need not bear it, and a woman who bears a child need not rear it."
