             In stienbeck's novel "Of Mice and Men' there is one main theme that is highlighted, which is the universal needs of human beginnings: the need for friendship, companionship and the needs for plans, hopes and dreams. But the harsh time of this book makes it difficult for the characters to fulfill there dreams because of who, what and where they are in the novel.
             During this period of time, the poorer working class had a hard life. A lot of people were unemployed and people who were employed had very little wages and poor working conditions. This explains why people did not obtain their dreams. Due to the loneness of the workers, they would go into town and spend all their money that they earned during the month on brothels and other things. They did this because they were lonely and had no real family. Stienbeck describe this perfectly in his novel.
