ary diving apparatus of his design. A suit with brass and leather pipes to the surface was produced in 1783, but was not practical because of its bulkiness (Carrier 7). A breakthrough came in 1865 when two French men used a metal canister on their backs charged with compressed air. A regulator was their most important invention, allowing the diver to breathe their air at the same pressure as the surrounding water (Sundain 2). The development of modern fins, mask, and snorkel came from some fisherman in the 1920's and 1930's. The first mask consisted of a pair of old flying goggles sealed with putty (3). Modern diving got its first true start in the 1940's, when sports divers were taught by pacific islanders to dive with only the aide of a mask and spear (2).
One diving technique that has proved to be useful has been diving in wartime situations. Some sources indicate that this began hundreds of years ago before Christ. Many old books and diaries tell of attacks planned and carried out underwater (Carrier 4). In the middle ages, divers were often used in Navel warfare. Occasionally, the two enemies would meet underwater and a battle would take place. This has continued to modern times. One example of this is the divers of World War II, who were called frogmen they were often sent to make complete surprise attacks on groups of unsuspecting enemies (5).
