An Important Incident in To Kill A Mockingbird

The most important event in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird happens in the last few chapters of the novel. It is when Bob Ewell attacks Jem and Scout Finch on their way home from the Halloween pageant, and it is the most important event because it is the climax of the story. Also, this novel begins at the end (this event), looking back at when Jem broke his arm during this incident and the rest of the novel looks back at the events that leads up to this.
After the initial attack, and Scout is back at home, we see that she has matured a lot throughout this story and has learned from Atticus¡ teaching and example. This is evident in her understanding of why Arthur Radley was not to be named as the one responsible for Bob Ewell¡s death. ¡§It¡d be kind of like shooting a mockingbird¡, and also when she has followed Arthur to his front porch, where she realises what it would be like to see things from his perspective. ¡§Atticus was right¡K You never really know someone until you climb into their shoes and walk in them¡
Through this event, Harper Lee also shows us some important values. One of these, is courage, and not only physical courage, but moral courage too. Arthur Radley demonstrated a huge amount of courage when he risked his own life to save the lives of Jem and Scout. This was one way that Lee showed the importance of courage. Another way, was by showing us what courage was not, through the cowardly act of Bob Ewell. He was a coward because he had attacked the children with an unfair disadvantage ¡V he was bigger and stronger than Jem and Scout.
Another theme shown in this event was justice. Justice was done for Tom Robinson, a black man who was wrongly accused for rape, when Bob Ewell was killed. This was, in a certain way, a natural justice, because it was Bob Ewell who wrongly accused Tom of rape, and pushed him to an escape attempt which led to his death, and now Bob Ewell is dead also.
