In "The Rocking-Horse Winner," by D.H. Lawrence luck is thought to be the controlling factor of people's lives. Throughout a person's life luck is the only controlling factor in this story. Paul is the major character in this story. Trough the story he considers himself lucky. While referring to luck Paul's mother says, "It's what causes you to have money. If you're lucky you have money" (par. 18). Luck is regarded as the idea that luck makes you prosperous. Without luck you can never prosper and are bound to failure. Paul's mother explains this idea in detail when she says, "That's why it's better to be born lucky than rich. If you're rich, you may lose you're money. But if you're lucky, you will always get more money" (par. 18).
             During the course of the story the narrator is trying to relate this idea of luck being the controlling factor these peoples lives. The narrator begins "The Rocking-Horse Winner" preparing to relate this idea of luck. He starts, " There was a woman who was beautiful, who started with all the advantages of life, ...(par. 1). He has given the idea she starts out well, with beauty and money. Then he says, "yet she had no luck" (par. 1). Although the mother is a minor character the narrator uses her to show the idea of luck through her experiences in life. He explains her life like this,
             She married for love, and the love turned to dust. She had bonny children,
             yet she felt she they had been thrust upon her, and she did not love them.
             They looked at her coldly, as if they were finding fault with her. And
             hurriedly she felt she must cover up some fault in herself. Yet what it
             was that she must cover up she never knew. Nevertheless, when her
             children were present, she always felt the center of her heart go hard.
