Immigration is the act of entering or settling into a country which one is not a native too. When a person immigrates they will undergo emotional distress and anger caused by the process of adapting to the new environment in which one has been embedded into. In Lost in Translation, Hoffman uses the notion of "lost in translation" as a metaphoric tool to demonstrate how language correlated with culture and society's perception acts as a factor in distinguishing a person's real identity.
             The emotional baggage that one carries as an immigrant is engulfed with feelings due to the process of adapting to a new language, culture, and tradition. Furthermore, the maturity of an individual can act as a catalyst on how fast one can mold ones self into a new society. Eva Hoffman considers language to be the principle theme used as the foundation to describe, identify and express her environment such that she has humanized language to make it as if it itself is contains a soul. For this reason which is why when her parents decided to immigrate to Canada in 1959, due to their fear of being Jewish and living in a Communist controlled area; Eva started to feel that her intimate experiences were going to diminish due to the fact that her English language was not mature enough for her to dwell in an English speaking environment.

I think that for a while I was, in effect, without language, because Polish lost its relevance to this new world and there were very few people with whom I could speak Polish, and I hadn't yet come into English.
