Book Review: The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui

             One of the most significant and interesting parts of world history started with Adolf Hitler's rise to power and the events following, until his death. Through satire, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, written by Bertolt Brecht, describes this period. Hitler's rise to power is described extensively through its main character, Arturo Ui.
             The play is organized into fifteen scenes. Each scene is preceded by a sign tying the events which were happening in Germany and the events taking place in the play. The signs make the symbolism extremely evident. Arturo Ui symbolizes Hitler, while many of the other characters symbolize other people involved with him during this time period.
             The play takes place in Chicago and deals with a fictional Cauliflower Trust and vegetable dealers. Ui is trying to take control of these industries and gain monetarily from them. Throughout the play, his illegal actions and manipulation of other people help him to accomplish his goals. At the end of the play, the audience realizes that this type of activity and gangster mentality actually does exist and causes death and struggle for the people involved with it directly and indirectly.
             Showing people the dangers of allowing a person such as Hitler to reach political height is the theme of the play. Brecht forces people to think critically about the actual events taking place, and the devastating outcomes possible from this. Arturo Ui manipulates people and uses scare tactics to get what he wants. Much like Hitler, Ui came from a poor background and worked his way into power. Ui plays on his downfalls for his gain of power. This is representative of Hitler using World War I to convince people that he was a common man, like everyone else.
             Although Brecht does not have a formal degree from a university, he did receive some education from Munich University. However, he dropped out of school with wishes to pursue a play writing...
