Present Issues Affecting Telemarketing

             Telemarketing in the United States is known to be one of the largest forms of marketing. It is an act preformed over the telephone to sell, promote, or solicit a product. Telemarketers are very much hated by the business community and homeowners. Some telemarketers take on the responsibility to take a phone number off their list when they are asked, and of course, some do not. Because people do not want to be disturbed by unwanted phone calls, mainly by telemarketers, recently, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) enacted a National "Do Not Call" registry. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and state law enforcement officials also manage this. There is also a thing called Call Intercept that Verizon Wireless introduced. The National "Do Not Call" registry and Call Intercept are a couple large issues telemarketing is facing today.
             The FCC revised the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), enacted in 1991, to become the national "do not call" registry on June 26, 2003. The TCPA prohibited autodialed calls, such as telemarketers, from calling emergency lines, paging services, health care facilities, and services where the consumer would be charged for the call, for an example, cellular phones. They also prohibited prerecorded messages for selling a product and sending advertisements to a fax machine. In 1992, the TCPA required for telemarketing companies to keep a do not call list for the consumers that do not want to be contacted again. The national "do not call" registry does not guarantee that every telemarketing company will stop calling you, but most will.
             As for Call Intercept, it only applies to the people that own caller ID and it costs five dollars a month.
