Throughout the play, Septimus Hodge is fancied by three of the prominent ladies residing at the country home; the first being Mrs. Chater, the wife of the poet and botanist, Ezra Chater. The encounter itself is not part of the plot, but its many saucy details are circulated throughout the play and establish an undercurrent of coquetry and sexual drive that absorbs the characters as much or even more than anything else that's going on around them. If the relationship between Mr. Chater and his wife were to be described in terms of heat and dynamics, the play certainly paints a pretty stagnant and frigid picture of their relationship as can be deduced from Mr. Chater's comportment when he approaches Septimus.
