The idea of patriarchy began approximately 5000 years ago when the amount of agriculturally based villages rose, and the status of men declined. The hunters (men) were not needed as the woman did the majority of the work, as well as were vital factors in increasing the population. Certain societies benefited and certain societies suffered from their decision to select this patriarchal way of life.
There were two main benefits to a patriarchal society. To begin with, women were beginning to cause "chaos" in public areas. This was because of gossip amongst the women. For example, they would talk about who impregnated whom, and which of the males was better looking. The female body was also becoming a distraction to the males in the villages. Time being spent in town was becoming non-efficient, so militarized societies (led by men) took over and the patriarchal order was put into place. They first led by terror, then instructed people with this ideal. Women's freedom of association and speech had to be taken away for the benefit of the town. Secondly, if a society wanted to be militarized, it would need people. This made it necessary to destroy the status of women so they could become birthing vassals. If women's freedom of choice were still in place, the women (especially educated ones) most likely would have chosen to give birth to smaller amounts of children, thus leading to a smaller military.
The disadvantages to a patriarchal society are the following. With the arrival of agriculture and the more frequent pregnancies, women began to become extremely drained, and as a result suffered from poorer health. In addition, the new extremely lowered status of women made the men that much more powerful. The women lost their wealth and property to the men of the family, and rules and regulations were made to provide assurances to the fathers of the children.
